Fusion Fitness

My storie

Lank gelede het my Pa vir my gese:   “Hoekom begin jy nie jou eie gym nie?”

My kop het in alle rigtings begin dink….

Help my asseblief.

Toeval…. Ek dink nie so nie…

In November 2013 het ek my eerste personal training klient gehad.

Ek was in ‘n sak en as want ek was geforseer om my studio onmiddelik te sluit omrede dit ‘n onwettige besigheid is onder andere. Dis my inkomste,my bestaan en my lewensbestaan …hoe nou gemaak? In Desember 2016 het ek my studio binne ‘n dag geskuif na my huidige perseel. Here gevra;  “Help my asseblief.”

My Story (Personal Trainer Barney Groenewald)

Long ago my dad told me, “Why don’t you start your own gym?” And I just thought to myself … Yes … Yes, what are the chances of me having my own business and making a living from it. So the idea was left there and I just smiled, struggling just to keep head above water.

In 2013, the idea started tossing and turning in me again, because my overseas contracts were ending and what now??? Finding similar work in South Africa in the first place would be very difficult and secondly, I would have to come and work for peanuts again.

My head started thinking in all directions…. How, where, when, how will I afford it, where will I get enough clients and all that stuff. All the time I anticipated the idea and was scared sometimes. But I didn’t give up…. I considered all sorts of options and then decided to approach my parents and asked them if I could convert one half of the double garage at their home into a small private studio where I would do personal training and small group classes. With their positive and enthusiastic “yes any time” I decided to continue.

Fortunately, it wasn’t a single project. I told the Lord… I am bringing this plan and studio and business to you. Please help me. Today I look back and I know that success can be attributed to God’s guidance and assistance every day.

Everything just fell into place. Ideas simply developed one after the other. I knew exactly what to do.

And so the studio began to take shape and as the construction progressed, the next thing after

the other worked out perfectly and small miracles happen daily. Eg: The blue exercise mat – it’s a 20 mm thick commercial mat and is not sold to individuals. When I asked the supplier after that, I was not turned away, but was told, “Let me see what I can do.” He later told me he has 20 square meters available. And how much did I need??? 20 square meters. Coincidence???? Definitely not…. The aluminum door was then already installed. My dad and I started to lay the mat ourselves, and when we reached the door, I realized how thick the carpet was and was very worried that the door would not close over the carpet. I closed my eyes and said, “Dear Jesus, please let it work out well and that the door shut over the carpet.” With 2mm to spare, the door over the carpet opened and closed. Coincidence…. I don’t think so…

With good guidance, funds were always enough and I could stay in my budget. So there were many neat things that had fallen into place all the time.

Meanwhile, I also started contacting people and potential clients. I walked around in the neighborhood and started marketing my studio through “word of mouth”. In November 2013 I had my first personal training client. My studio and business grew slowly to about 5 to 7 clients a day.

A few months later I was offered a contract in Montenegro which I accepted with some uncertainty. It was a difficult decision because I started developing a loyalty towards my clients and didn’t want to lose their confidence and be known as a trainer who comes and goes and is only to be welcomed back after a foreign contract was offered to me. I accepted a further contract in Thailand but was short-lived and in April 2014 I returned to South Africa with the decision to stay permanently. During my time in Thailand, I was contacted by Tonja Loader, who was referred by Glenda Massyn. Tonja was in the process of closing her pilates studio and looking for someone to take it over from her. Well, the rest is history and from then on, the studio has grown exponentially and I have gained many clients for classes and personal training as well as referrals from the group class members. Once again, I experienced the Lord’s grace and He looked after me very well and just increased my success.

I want to add that during my time abroad, God gave me a trainer, Richnard Marais, who could continue to train my clients and at the same time build his own client base. For a better substitute/help and child of the Lord I could not ask. The clients found a positive appeal at Richnard and later became a real pillar to rely on. When I returned later, we worked extremely well together and further expanded the studio.

After returning from my holiday in 2016, I was welcomed by a complaint letter from my neighbour who was sent to me by the municipality. I was in dismay and as I was forced to close my studio immediately because it is an illegal business among other things. I asked the Lord… ”What now????” It’s my income, my existence, and my livelihood… how now? I started driving around and looking for potential sites. There were some available but got a lot of opposition and I started to get discouraged. I walked to the sea to clean my head and as I walked I saw an advertisement here in Van Blommenstein street for a property for rent. Long story short…. In December 2016 I moved my studio to my current premises within a day. This was a huge risk to me because the rent was high and I didn’t know if I could be financially capable. But I did not lose my trust and once again asked the Lord; “Please help me.” I am extremely well looked after and my client numbers have grown tremendously – to such an extent that at some point I had to

Without expanding too much, I can testify that every day, week, month and year I am fortunate to have had success. Not on my own – I give all the honor and thanks to God the Father. He has never disappointed. There were times when I was struggling, especially financially, but every time I was blessed above my expectations. Much more than I asked for. Today and every day I thank the Lord very much for being looking after me without fail.

You, all of you, my clients, are little miracles whom the Father sent to me and every day and contribute to the success of Fusion Fitness. To put it differently – You are Fusion Fitness. So from the depths of my heart and soul, I would like to thank you all for your support – loyal support and faith in me to make a small difference in your life. Everyone, in his/her particular way, makes me feel special and privileged to be part of your life.

Your support with collections for my charities, special moments in classes and small gifts, your patience, kindness, help, jokes and even the moaning and groaning when practicing hard. Everything makes it exciting and a joy to have this special relationship with you all. Thank you for supporting me and contributing to the success of Fusion Fitness. I look forward to many more years with you all.
